De Efteling
Client: De Efteling, Uitgeverij Rubinstein
Published: 2016, 2022, 2024 – The Netherlands
Project goal
For several official children’s books from the world of De Efteling — the Netherlands’ most iconic fairytale theme park — I was commissioned to illustrate both classic and lesser-known fairy tales. These publications were part of the Little Golden Books series and the Omnibus Sprookjes II, created in collaboration with publisher Rubinstein.
Illustrated titles
The Princess on the Pea (Little Golden Books)
The Little Match Girl (Little Golden Books)
Genoveva’s Dowry (Omnibus Sprookjes II)
The Flying Dutchman (Omnibus Sprookjes II)
Rapunzel (Omnibus Sprookjes II)
My approach
Working within the rich visual tradition of De Efteling, I aimed to balance classic fairytale aesthetics with my own contemporary, atmospheric style. Each story required a distinct emotional tone — from delicate and dreamy to eerie or theatrical — while remaining accessible to a young audience. I focused on timeless composition, detailed environments, and expressive characters that evoke a sense of wonder.
Result & legacy
The books were published between 2016 and 2024, and are part of De Efteling’s growing legacy of storytelling through illustration. They are available in bookstores across the Netherlands and continue to connect generations of readers with timeless tales — in both familiar and surprising forms.
