Project goal
This charming picture book ‘Ziza doesn’t like to be a ninja’  tells the story of Ziza — a sensitive boy who lives in a ninja village but doesn’t want to follow the ninja path. The story plays with themes of individuality and breaking expectations. I was responsible for the full illustration series, helping bring Ziza’s quirky, energetic world to life.

My approach
The illustrations are dynamic, colorful and full of expressive character poses, designed to mirror Ziza’s sensitive but rebellious nature. I created a lively visual rhythm that supports the pacing of the text, combining action, humor and warmth. The artwork also formed the base for an animated book trailer, produced by Mitchell Tan.

Result & reception
Published by Uitgeverij Moon in 2021, the book received praise for its original theme and bold visual style. Ziza’s story struck a chord with children who don’t like to be boxed in — and with the adults raising them.
